PICKLE TALK

The 2024 Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction® Pickleball World Championships Recap

Another year, another record-breaking championship. Are you read to give to us Mr. Kent Brockman?

Alright. The floor is yours Kent.

Greetings, loyal viewers!

This just in: the Lapiplasty Pickleball World Championships delivered drama, glory, and a good helping of pickleball mayhem. If you missed it, don’t worry—I’m is here to break it all down like a paddle smashing a pickleball at 40 mph. Let’s take a look:

Breaking Records and Hearts

🌟 3,507 players—an all-time high!

☀️ Great weather—once the rain clouds got the memo.

🏅 Five electrifying pro events—more action than a soap opera during sweeps week.

1. Men’s Doubles: Riley Newman is Back in the Winner’s Circle

The scoop: Riley Newman and Hayden Patriquin claimed gold, ending Newman’s winless drought. Patriquin’s adaptability shines—two golds in one year with two different partners. Is he the one to dethrone Ben Johns? Only time will tell.

Drama alert: Newman faced his ex-partner Matt Wright in the semis. Awkward much? Newman and Patriquin triumphed over Wright and Federico Staksrud to book their spot in the final.

Other nuggets:

🥈 Dekel Bar and Pablo Tellez proved they’re a force, even as underdogs.

🥉 Quang Duong and CJ Klinger shocked the world by taking out the Johns brothers 11-1, 11-6. You heard it here first—I totally predicted that upset.

2. Men’s Singles: Federico Staksrud Steals the Show

Top story: Staksrud snagged gold with a commanding win over #21 seed Michael Loyd.

Underdog moment: Michael Loyd stunned the field, taking down Ben Johns, JW Johnson, and Quang Duong before falling to Staksrud. His fearless play is one to watch in 2025.

Quick takes:

• The men’s singles field is a shark tank—rising stars like Hunter Johnson and Noe Khlif are circling for their moment.

• Khlif gave Staksrud a scare, pushing the gold medalist to three games.

3. Women’s Doubles: Bright and Rohrabacher Shine Brightest

The lowdown: Anna Bright and Rachel Rohrabacher dismantled #1 seeds Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau in straight sets. Their aggressive play targeted Parenteau—and it worked like a charm.

Other highlights:

🥉 Tyra Black and Allyce Jones grabbed bronze, the only duo to take a game off the champions.

4. Women’s Singles: ALW Stays Unstoppable

Headline news: Anna Leigh Waters waltzed to gold without dropping a single game. Her final victim? Kate Fahey, who’s inching closer to a breakthrough year.

Notable players:

🥉 Salome Devidze snuck past Catherine Parenteau for bronze.

• Parenteau’s form is slipping, and the women’s singles scene is heating up like a backyard barbecue.

5. Mixed Doubles: Ben Johns and ALW = Unbeatable

No surprises here: The #1 seeds Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters crushed their way to gold, proving they’re the team to beat.

Close contenders: Christian Alshon and Etta Wright gave it their all but couldn’t stop the juggernaut.

Bronze watch: Federico Staksrud and Rachel Rohrabacher edged Quang Duong and Anna Bright in a nail-biter for third.

What’s Next in Pickleball?

Two tournaments remain in the 2024 season, folks:

1️⃣ Veolia Milwaukee Open (November 14): The final chance for players to punch their ticket to the season-ending showdown.

2️⃣ CIBC PPA Finals (December 4): Where legends are forged, dreams are crushed, and pickleballs fly like fireworks.

BITE-SIZED PICKLES to watch out for this week 👀

1/ The Quiet Revolution: PICKLEGLASS™ Courts Are Here

Pickleball meets peace and quiet in Denver. PICKLETILE™ is teaming up with Toll Brothers to install its innovative PICKLEGLASS™ soundproof courts at the new luxury Cherry Creek Trail community.

Here’s what makes these courts special:

50% Noise Reduction: PICKLEGLASS™ tech tackles pickleball’s biggest controversy—noise—making it neighbor-friendly.

Smart Access: The INFINITYGATE™ system offers keyless, secure entry for residents.

Pro Lighting: Courts come equipped with LSI Zone LEDs, meeting USA Pickleball standards for top-notch play.

Low Maintenance: Self-cleaning glass infused with polysiloxane? Yes, please.

Set to open in January 2025, these courts are more than just a place to play—they’re a nod to luxury living and harmonious community vibes.

One thing’s clear: the future of pickleball is quieter, smarter, and better-lit. Fingers crossed.

2/ Pickleball Scoring Myths: Debunked by Data

Robert S Cormack of The Dink recently analyzed 82 pro doubles matches from the 2024 PPA Rate Championships to find out if comebacks are as common as people think.

According to his calculations….Spoiler: They’re not.

Here’s the breakdown:

Serve First or Second? No Advantage Here

The debate over whether serving first gives you a leg up is officially dead.

• Across 82 games, the team that served first won exactly 50% of the time.

• Translation: The serve is a non-factor when it comes to victory.

If you’re obsessing over who starts the game with the ball, stop. It doesn’t matter. (according to the stats that is…)

The Real Tipping Points

Where the game gets decided is in the scoreline.

Here’s what the data shows about reaching key points first:

1. First to 9 Points:

98% of teams who hit 9 points first went on to win.

• Basically, if your opponents hit 9, you might as well start planning for game two.

2. First to 6 Points:

88% win rate for teams who reached 6 first.

• It’s not just about the late game—early momentum matters too.

3. First to 4 Points:

89% of teams who reached 4 points first won their match.

• Even a small lead can snowball into victory.

So…Should You Give Up?

Not quite. The odds of a comeback may be slim, but it’s not impossible. If anything, this data proves how crucial the early stages of a match are. Get ahead, stay ahead—that’s the game.

Takeaways for Players

1. Focus on early momentum. Winning those first few rallies is more important than you think.

2. Don’t stress over serves. It’s what you do after the serve that counts.

3. Embrace the challenge. Sure, comebacks are rare—but pulling one off is what makes a match unforgettable.

Final Thoughts

This analysis is based on pro matches, where players are cool under pressure and rarely choke. For rec players? Nerves and momentum shifts can still create wild swings.

Thanks for the breakdown, Robert ;)
