DAILY SCOOP

No Open Pickleball Courts?

This App Lets You Rent Your Own

With over 36 million dinkle-dunkers in the US and 25,000 paddle-wielders Down Under, scoring some court time is a whole new ball game.

(or, in some situations, a potential brawl fight for those who are ready to risk their lives for an hour of play 👀)

Public pickleball courts are more jammed up than Coachella port-a-potties these days and some players are asking the question:

What the heck can I do about it?

Enter Swimply, an app letting you rent out private pickleball pads for your pickle squad. (Think…Airbnb, but for pickleball)

Now that I’ve got your attention…how does it work? I’ll explain.

Users can book courts by the hour with prices from $25 to $100 and with quick games averaging 10-15 minutes, an hour still brings plenty of playtime without the crowds.

Listings are still slim pickins’ compared to the app’s thousands of pools (what the app is originally known for)…

BUT new courts are added daily as Swimply jumps into the pickleball game.

How this can benefit YOU?

Renting privately helps you avoid public play headaches like noise squabbles, court shutdowns, and paddle-hogging opponents. And if you've got a court, you can make bank by listing it yourself.

Even down in Australia, apps are solving the pickleball crunch.

After discovering the game abroad, one Aussie player converted her unused tennis court into a prime pickleball pad. At $80K it wasn’t cheap, but she rents it for $30/hour to alleviate some of the financial burden.

Demand could double there soon per Swimply’s Australia director. So take a page from this early trend.

If you’ve always wanted to build a court in your own backyard, this may be the perfect justification you need to build and own your own private court & make some money too.

NEWS STASH

You could’ve played pickleball with Euphoria star, Jacob Elordi…but for a price

Happenings: Filmmaker Sofia Coppola's crew got straight-up pickleball obsessed on the set of her new Elvis/Priscilla biopic.

Coppola spilled that her favorite memory was the cast n' crew tourney after building a pickleball court during production. She even considered auctioning off a match with star Jacob Elordi to fund an extra shoot day — though turns out he's no hardcore pickleballer.

While preppin' the flick based on Priscilla's memoir, Coppola was nervous to meet the legend herself. But Priscilla generously sat for multiple interviews and follow-up calls.

The movie starring Cailee Spaeny premiered big in Venice, snagging Best Actress. It retells Elvis and Priscilla's romance from her perspective, one year after Baz Luhrmann's biopic.

So while pickleball didn't make the final cut, it clearly brought some chill vibes and camaraderie to offset the drama. And who knows, maybe it'll start trending on more movie sets as the cast n' crew's pickleball obsession continues!

Sanata Monica Pickleball Club set ablaze🔥

Happenings: A suspected arsonist lit up Santa Monica's beloved nonprofit pickleball club, torching their storage shed and destroying thousands in gear.

The 1,800-member club offers free public play at Memorial Park, recently converted from tennis courts.

Some suspect angry tennis lovers or private court rivals sparked the early Monday blaze after ongoing tensions over pickleball's takeover of public parks.

Who could it be? The investigation awaits…

O-H-I-O to the Columbus Sliders

Happenings: Pickleball's Columbus team just rebranded as the Columbus Sliders with a saucy sponsorship from fast food fave White Castle.

The burger fast food chain is proudly slapping their logo on uniforms for the newly minted Sliders squad. MLP's COO called it a "powerhouse partnership," proof of pickleball's rising cachet.

The deets? The Columbus franchise was whipped up last year by local entrepreneur bigwigs. Now they've got world #2 male player JW Johnson and White Castle craving their success.

Look out for more pairings as MLP expands.

Who knows? If brands gobble up pickleball, athletes could be sporting Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut patches in no time.

SIZZLING SKILLS

In a pickle:

Don’t get cocky when you THINK you’ve won the point (and slip out an F bomb instead)…

Cause your ego will be hurt, and the ref may or may not penalize you for that potty mouth.

You’ve been warned.

In a pickle:

Keep you body parallel to the net and move those legs like a crab and shuffle it left and right.

Why?

  1. It reduces lower back and knee pains

  2. Controlled movement = controlled hits = more wins

Win. Win. And Win.
